Augusta, Gone shows how drugs and alcohol do not fix problems but create new problems. Augusta, a teenage girl, lives with her younger brother and single mother. As Augusta begins to experience new influences from classmates, she makes riskier decisions about her life and with whom to associate. She challenges authority and separates from her friends to fit into a new social group. These actions lead her to drug and alcohol use, and she ends up on the street. In an effort to help, Augusta’s parents send her to a wilderness camp for troubled teens. The strict, tough staff can’t keep Augusta under control either. Her mother realizes she can do nothing to change her daughter’s life. Augusta has to make the decision to change herself.
