Freedom Writers illustrates how one person’s selflessness and determination can allow many people to overcome the limitations of prejudice and ignorance. This movie is set in 1994, two years after Woodrow Wilson High School in Long Beach, California started a voluntary integration program. During that time, the student racial diversity increased greatly, and the school lost its high academic standing. Gang activity and violence became commonplace. As a new teacher at Woodrow Wilson, Erin Gruwell is not prepared for these challenges. As the students gradually open up to her, she sees that they must overcome their prejudices to achieve a better life. She confronts challenge after challenge educating her students but does not give up on them.
