The Spectabular Now illustrates how it is easier not to start a bad habit than it is to stop a bad habit. Sutter Keely, a high school senior, has a seemingly perfect life. He is popular, confident and has a job he likes. He will graduate soon, but doesn’t have plans after high school. Unknown to most people, he is already an alcoholic and drinks spiked drinks all day at school. His life takes an unexpected turn when he meets a girl who is very different than him. She never had a boyfriend, doesn’t drink alcohol, and has plans for her future. As the senior year progresses, their relationship develops despite their differences. His alcoholism begins to have greater negative impacts on his life.
